It has been revealed that Mel Gibson will be directing a film by the name of, "Apocalypto."
Apocalypto in Greek means, "an unveiling."
I'm wondering if the film will revolve around the stories of Herodotus of Halicarnassus and the expansion of the Achaemenid empire...that is until the battle against the Greeks.
Only time will tell.

Interesting: a few years ago, me writing in Avary's Domain that Gibson came to mind for an apocalypse film involving Herculaneum (which is still on my mind, not as project, but as reality, the destruction and impact upon civilization from the Mnt. Vesuvius destruction).
Just saying, the man's in a great position to now produce, direct and/or any combination of both his own projects, his own way. Which is something I am immensely grateful for: a filmmaker with a unique perspective and a moral guide enabled to explore both.
My only difference with the opinions (your link) is that, rather, Gibson is the new GIBSON, not another permutation of Lucas -- Lucas didn't so much as branch out or explore a range so much as he intensely developed (some think, over developed) one basic premise as to his literary perception (immensely well developed, however). Mel Gibson's not been reticent to seek a variety of contexts and best ever, not allowed fear of box office to define what it is he's explored in film.
But many of us are now in a position of anticipating what Gibson will do next. He's certainly not depleted his range of surprises.
I sure would like to do the logo for Apocalypto, 'case Mel is reading. ~;-D

I'm wondering how many centuries ago is 3,000 years, if that's equivalent with "Fifth Century BCE"...
It could also deal with the Maccabees -- never know.
Indeed...this may very well be the Maccabees project he's been wanting to do.

Yeah, Maccabees is most likely since I've read that, also, was/is an interest of Gibson's. Certainly remarkable history, and, from a "not religious" editorial perspective (since Gibson's said APOCALYPTO isn't planned to be a religious-themed one), but from a point of civilization and history alone, not to mention 'nation building' among populations, fascinating.
APOCALYPTO "to be filmed in obscure Mayan dialect" sorta rules out the Maccabees...unless, unless...I guess we'll have to wait and see!
